A heart says more than a thousand words – especially when it’s crocheted yourself. A gift that comes from the heart is the right choice, and not just for Valentine’s Day. In this article we will show you a loving DIY project for anyone who wants to give something special as a gift. Read how to crochet a Danish heart here. You don’t know what a Danish heart is? No problem, we’ll tell you.

It originally comes – of course – from Denmark and is known for its typical checkerboard pattern. It is traditionally woven from paper and often used as a Christmas decoration in red and white. For Valentine’s Day it gets a cozy upgrade: instead of paper you use wool and instead of scissors you use a crochet hook. The principle remains the same: two simple parts are intertwined and create a heart with a wow effect. Let’s go!

1. Crochet piece number 1

Take the yarn of one color and start crocheting 16 loose chain stitches. In the second row you crochet 14 single crochet stitches from the second stitch, in the last stitch you crochet 5 single crochet stitches for the curve.

Turn your work and crochet 14 single crochet stitches again on the other side of the chain stitch and 5 single crochet stitches again in the last stitch. Close the round with a slip stitch.

Now come the typical slots for braiding: Crochet 20 chain stitches, skip 13 stitches and crochet the chain stitch chain with a single crochet stitch in the next stitch. In the next 3 stitches on the curve you crochet 2 single crochet stitches and then a single crochet stitch. Repeat this on the other side and also start with 20 chain stitches.

The next row begins with single crochet stitches, which you crochet into the chain stitch chain. Crochet 2 double crochets into the curve, then 4 × 2 double crochets into one stitch and then 2 double crochets again. You crochet the next round in the same way, but now you crochet 8 × 2 double crochets in one stitch. Repeat on the other side, finishing with a slip stitch, cutting the thread a little longer and pulling it through the stitch before fastening and cutting it.

2. Crochet piece number 2

You crochet the second crochet piece for your Danish heart exactly the same way, but use a different color.

3. Now we braid

Once you have crocheted both pieces for the Danish heart, place both crochet pieces on top of each other, left sides together. Fold everything in half so that the three stripes are visible. Now braid these three strips alternately over and under each other until a heart is formed and both colors are evenly distributed. Sew the sides together with a yarn needle.

Tipp: If you want to fill your Danish heart after crocheting, don’t close the sides completely, just close them enough to create a small pocket.

Crocheting a Danish heart looks complicated at first glance, but with a little practice it is also suitable for beginners. You can fill the finished heart with small love messages or sweets. Or you can attach a suspension between the heart curves and use it as a cute pendant. This little crocheted project is ideal if you want to give a heartfelt gift to a loved one. We hope you have fun imitating it.
