Macrame is a traditional knotting technique that has been trendy again in recent years. It is perfect for creating decorative elements that not only look beautiful but are also functional. A homemade macrame plant hanger is ideal for enhancing your balcony without spending a lot of money. In these instructions you will learn how to proceed step by step so that you end up with an individual piece that fits stylishly on your balcony.

Proper preparation is everything when it comes to macrame

Before you begin, you should have all the materials you need ready. For a classic plant hanger, it’s best to use:

  • 3-4mm thick Makramee-Garn đź›’ (cotton for indoors, polyester for outdoors), approx. 20-30 meters
  • 1 wooden ring or metal ring for hanging
  • 1 plant pot (diameter 12-18 cm)
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive tape or clips for fixing
  • Optional: wooden beads or colored yarn for accents

Step 1: Cutting and attaching

Cut four strands of macrame yarn, each 3-4 meters long. Fold each strand in half so you have eight ends of equal length. Thread the center points through the ring and secure with a lark’s head knot. Now eight strands hang evenly from the ring – the base of your plant hanger.

Step 2: Design the upper knot area

To ensure that the pendant looks not only functional but also decorative, start with a decorative area about 3-5 cm below the ring. You can tie multiple spiral or square knots to create a beautiful pattern. Make sure to work evenly so that the hanger doesn’t hang crooked later.

Step 3: Form working groups

Divide the eight strands into four pairs – each pair is an “arm” of your plant holder. Tie 8-12 square knots on each arm. The nodes should be at the same height so that your plant pot hangs straight later.

Step 4: Make the net for the pot

Now comes the crucial step: the holding net. Place your arms next to each other and take one strand from one arm and one from the neighboring arm. Tie these together halfway up the pot using 3-4 square knots. Repeat the process all around. This creates a net in which you can safely insert the pot.

Step 5: Finishing and finishing touches

Bring all the strands together and secure them with a wrap knot about 2-3cm below the bottom of the pot. Trim the ends evenly or leave them hanging as decorative fringes. If you want to use wooden beads, you can thread them onto the strands before making the final knot.

Step 6: Insert the pot and hang it up

Carefully place the pot in the net and check that it sits evenly. Hang the finished macrame plant hanger on a sturdy hook on the balcony, on the ceiling or on a wall bracket. Make sure that the hook can easily support the weight of the pot and plant.

Get creative with colors

You can work with colored yarn to match the hanger to the rest of your balcony design. Incorporating beads or combining two yarn colors also creates interesting effects. If you want something particularly eye-catching, you can arrange several hangers of different lengths next to each other.

A macrame plant hanger is not only a practical way to present your plants in a space-saving manner, but also a decorative highlight that immediately creates cosiness. With a little practice and creativity, you can create individual pieces that fit your style exactly – and you’ll be happy with your handmade work every time you look at them.
