Play Game

With maritime lanterns with sand you can bring a real holiday feeling home. All you need is a few materials, a little creativity and a little patience. The best thing: you can upcycle old glasses or bottles and do something for the environment.

This is what you need for maritime lanterns with sand

  • Waste glass (e.g. empty jam or pickle jars, wine bottles)
  • Tapered candle holder for bottles đź›’
  • Fine bird sand with small stones or pieces of shell for a beach look
  • a large bowl or baking dish
  • Craft glue
  • Paint brush
  • Washi tape or stickers in a circle, heart or star shape

This is how you make your lanterns

1. Prepare glasses

Find clean jars or bottles of different sizes. If you want to incorporate a pattern, add washi tape or stickers to the areas that you want to remain clear. Press the stickers firmly so that no glue runs underneath them later.

2. Apply glue

Use the brush to apply the craft glue evenly to the glass. Work quickly so that the glue does not dry prematurely. Make sure that there are no gaps – this is the only way the sand will stay even later.

3. Apply sand

Now comes the best part: Carefully sprinkle the bird sand over the glass or roll the glass in a bowl of sand. The fine sand with its small stones gives the lantern its typical maritime look.

4. Let dry

Place the glass in a protected place and allow the glue to dry completely. The sand bonds firmly to the glass and does not crumble later.

5. Remove washi tape

Once dry, carefully peel off the tape or stickers. The light now shines through particularly beautifully in the free areas.

Extra tips for your maritime lanterns with sand

  • Add color accents: Mix white and beige bird sand or add small shells or shell fragments.
  • For more holiday feeling: Place a piece of jute ribbon around the edge of the glass and glue a cockle to the end of the ribbon.
  • For variety: Make several glasses in different sizes – this looks particularly decorative on the balcony and place them on a tray.

With maritime lanterns with sand, you can turn mild summer evenings into little holiday moments on your balcony. The DIY is simple, cheap and ideal for upcycling old glass. Added to this is the charming beach look that goes well with any balcony decoration. So grab some glasses, sand and glue – and soon you’ll be enjoying the warm candlelight of your homemade lanterns.
