Materials for your planters made from plastic bottles

Materials:

  • Several large plastic bottles (1.5-2 liters – green ones are preferred)
  • Scissors or cutter
  • Sturdy rope or wire
  • Drill or sharp nail for holes
  • Potting soil đź›’
  • Seeds or small plants (e.g. herbs, strawberries, flowers)
  • Optional: wooden slats or grids for hanging

With these 5 steps you can create a vertical garden made of plastic bottles

Step 1: Prepare bottles

Clean the bottles thoroughly and remove labels. Cut out a rectangular opening on the side – large enough to later fill in soil and insert plants. Drill a few small holes at the bottom of the bottles so that excess water can drain out.

Step 2: Design the suspension

Decide whether you want to hang the bottles vertically or horizontally. For a vertical version, drill two holes at the top and bottom and thread a strong rope through them. This way you can attach several bottles on top of each other. For the horizontal version, drill small holes on the left and right, pull wire through them and hang the bottles like plant pots.

Step 3: Fill in soil and insert plants

First place a thin layer of gravel or expanded clay in the bottles to avoid waterlogging. Then fill in potting soil and place your plants or seeds in it. Herbs such as basil, parsley or mint thrive particularly well, but small strawberry plants or colorful flowers are also ideal.

Step 4: Find location

Attach your bottles to a sturdy wooden frame, a grid or directly to the balcony railing. Make sure that the plants get enough light – sunny to partially shaded is ideal.

Step 5: Care and Watering

Because the bottles contain little soil, they dry out more quickly than large pots. That’s why you should water regularly – ideally with a watering can with a fine nozzle or a spray bottle. A small dash of liquid fertilizer ensures strong growth.

To make your garden work even better, you can paint the outside of the bottles colorfully or write on them with waterproof pens – so you always know what is growing where. Particularly practical: If you arrange the bottles so that excess water can drip from one plant to the next, you save time and water when watering.

A vertical garden made of plastic bottles is not only environmentally friendly, but also a real eye-catcher. You use materials that would otherwise end up in the trash and transform them into a living decorative element. Ideal for anyone who wants to transform their balcony or terrace into a green oasis.
